License and Limitations:

To ride our electric motorcycles (which are classified as 50cc motorcycles or mopeds) on public roads, you need to have either a valid CBT test certificate or a valid provisional or a full driving license that includes motorcycles up to 50cc.

If you are below 16 years of age:

Unfortunately, you cannot legally ride a Motoglide on public roads. However, you can prepare by applying for your provisional driving license when you are 15 years and 9 months old, and if you are lucky enough to have access to some private property which is suitable to practice on, then you can prepare for the practical CBT (compulsory basic training) test which you will be able to take on or after your 16th birthday.

If you are 16 years old:

You have reached the age where you can legally ride a Motoglide on public roads once you have passed your practical CBT (compulsory basic training) test. Once you have this certificate, you can ride on any roads except motorways. You must have Learner plates on your Motoglide, until you either pass a driving test or a full motorcycle test. Your CBT license at 16 years old is effectively a provisional motorcycle license, which means you cannot take passengers and you must pass your driving test or full motorcycle test within 2 years. If you do not pass one of these tests within 2 years, you will need to renew your CBT by taking the test again.

If you are 17 years or older:

You still need to have completed a CBT course in order to ride your Motoglide. However, you are now old enough to take your full motorcycle or driving test. If you receive either of these, you may remove your learner plates and carry one passenger on your Motoglide. However, the same rules apply with a CBT certificate, meaning that if you do not pass the full motorcycle or driving test, you will still need to retake your CBT every 2 years.

If you have passed your driving test before 1st February 2001:

You do not need to take a CBT test, you can legally ride a Motoglide without learner plates and carry a passenger. Some driving licenses issued after 1st February 2001 do include motorcycles up to 50cc or 125cc. You can check wht vehicles are included on your license at https://www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence

Once you have passed your full motorcycle or driving test, you are allowed to ride until your license expires, without having to retake your CBT.

MOT:

All vehicles in the UK more than three years old need an MOT, including our electric motorcycles. This MOT will cover all the same tests as a standard motorcycle except that it will not include an emissions test.

Tax:

Electric vehicles are exempt from vehicle tax but must still display a tax disc – this is issued free of charge and will need to be renewed each year.

Registration:

Electric motorcycles must be registered with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) and display number plates in the same way as any other motorcycle. When you purchase a MotoGlide from us we will register it with the DVLA and supply and fit the number plate for you, which saves you considerable time, the £55 registration fee and the cost of the number plate itself.

Insurance:

Motor insurance is legally required before you can ride your electric motorcycle on public roads. Many motor insurance companies provide cover for electric motorcycles. Try www.carolnash.com who specialise in excellent value motorcycle insurance

Congestion Charge:

Electric motorcycles are exempt from congestion charges in the U.K.
